Just a quick update on some exciting news over the past few weeks:

First, I am grateful to both ACM-SIGARCH and IEEE-TCCA for providing me with a Travel Grant to attend the 33rd Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA).

Second, Xin and I just received word that the paper we worked on “Characterizing Microarchitecture Soft Error Vulnerability Phase Behavior” over the fall has been accepted at the International Symposium on Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (MASCOTS) this September in Monterey, California. This is Xin’s first as well as my first conference publication.

I was informed today that I will be the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The award is valued at $121,500 over a three year period, and is made “to outstanding graduate students who demonstrate the potential to become knowledge experts and who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. It is based on a nationally competitive fellowship application that is evaluated according to the NSF Merit Review Criteria of Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts.” I applied for this fellowship back in early November. I am very honored to have been chosen to receive this prestigious award, and I would like to thank those that wrote my letters of recommendation; Dr. Tao Li (Computer Architecture), Dr. William Eisenstadt (Circuit Design) and Dr. Alan George (Parallel Computer Architecture). Without the time and effort spent by these three great professors, I would not have stood a chance at earning such an award. I would also like to thank my father who probably spent more time proof reading and enhancing my essays than I spent writing them. This award is definitely something that all five of us can share much pride in earning.

I have again been appointed as the publications and publicity chair for the Workshop on the Interaction between Operating Systems and Computer Architecture. This year the workshop will be held with in conjunction with the prestigious ISCA conference in Boston, MA. I will also been attendance this year for the workshop. To avoid confusion with the main conference name, we have changed the acronym for the workshop from ISCA to WIOSCA. More information on the workshop can be found at:

I have been appointed the Publicity and Publications chair for the Workshop on Interaction between Operating Systems and Computer Architecture (IOSCA). This is my first chance at serving the architecture community, so I am pretty excited about it. My primary duty will be to coordinate the call for papers with the conference chair as well as handle the final publication of the proceedings and to contact guests. More information about the Workshop itself is listed below:

Title: Workshop on Interaction between Operating System and Computer Architecture (IOSCA)

Organizer and affiliation: Tao Li, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ECE, University of Florida, taoli@ece.ufl.edu

Workshop Overview and Topics:
Operating systems (OS) constitute a major software component and are essential to any computing system. Commercial and server workloads such as online transaction processing, database, file/e-mail servers involve significant OS activity. The interaction between OS and emerging architecture (e.g. SMT and multi-core) / technology (e.g. hardware virtualization) are projected to increase significantly. Currently, much of the research that influenced the design of computer systems largely focused on user level applications. To optimize system performance, it is important to merge the two constantly evolving, but many times quite independently components รข??computer architecture and OS to address these design challenges.

This workshop focuses on characterizing, modeling and optimizing the interaction between OS and hardware in the light of emerging architecture paradigms, workloads and computing technology. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Characterization of OS activity in Emerging Workloads
  • Frameworks and Tools for Full System Simulation
  • Techniques for Improving ILP performance of OS Code
  • OS-aware Microarchitecture (e.g. predictor, cache and execution unit) Design
  • Techniques to reduce the Interference between OS and User Applications
  • Workload Variability Issues in Complete System Evaluation
  • Hardware Accelerators for Key OS Services (e.g. networking, data copy)
  • Minimization of Power Consumption of OS Execution
  • Effect of OS mechanisms (e.g. scheduling) on Emerging Architecture (e.g. SMT and Multi core)
  • OS-intensive Benchmark Suite
  • Implication of Hardware Virtualization and Virtual Machine on Operating System Design

Furthermore, the workshop aims at providing a forum for researchers and engineers from academia and industry to discuss their latest research on the above fields.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submit a 200-word abstract including title and complete author list in email (plain text preferred) to taoli@ece.ufl.edu by Sept. 9th, 2005.
  • Submit a 5000-word manuscript in email (pdf or ps format) to taoli@ece.ufl.edu by Sept. 16th, 2005.
  • Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent out on Oct 1st.

New Homepage

Now that I have completely switched over to Ubuntu Linux, based on the Debian distribution, I decided to give my website a bit of an upgrade. Since I don’t have the time to program an entirely new code base, I decided to simply use the WordPress blogging suite to allow me to design a consistent site that I can easily make additions to (as well as provide me a place to vent frustrations).

I hope that this new website will prove to be a valuable resource to my friends, family, and members of the computer software and architecture communities. The website will begin fairly bare, however over time I hope to fill it with valuable insight, research, and personal information. It will also always contain an up to date version of my calendar and available times, as well as contact and cv information.

Enjoy!
